The SAT is the standardised test used for university admissions across the United States and increasingly around the world. The digital SAT, administered by the College Board, is adaptive — your performance on the first module of each section determines the difficulty of the second module. This means every question matters, and strategic preparation is as important as content knowledge.

The Mathematics section of the digital SAT consists of 44 questions across 70 minutes, split into two adaptive modules of 22 questions each (35 minutes per module). Approximately 75% of questions are multiple-choice with four answer options; the remaining 25% are student-produced response (grid-in) questions where you enter a numerical answer.

The test is divided into four content areas: Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry. The College Board provides a built-in calculator (Desmos) for the entire section, so you do not need to bring your own.

Algebra is the foundation of the SAT Math section. You need fluency with linear equations, inequalities, systems of two equations, and function notation. The test often presents algebraic problems in real-world contexts — you must translate word problems into equations before solving them.

Advanced Math covers quadratic equations, exponential functions, polynomial expressions, and rational expressions. You should be comfortable completing the square, using the quadratic formula, and manipulating exponents. Functions appear frequently, including piecewise functions and transformations.

Problem Solving and Data Analysis tests your ability to interpret tables, graphs, and scatterplots. You need to understand ratios, percentages, proportional relationships, and statistical measures such as mean, median, standard deviation, and margin of error. Questions often ask you to draw conclusions from real data sets.

Geometry and Trigonometry covers area and volume formulas, circle theorems, triangle properties, right-triangle trigonometry, and radian measure. The formula reference sheet provided during the test includes many formulas, but you still need to know when and how to apply them.


The Reading and Writing section of the digital SAT consists of 54 questions across 64 minutes, split into two adaptive modules of 27 questions each (32 minutes per module). All questions are multiple-choice with four answer options.

Questions are organised by passage — each passage (or pair of passages) is accompanied by a set of questions. Passages are drawn from literature, history/social studies, science, and poetry. The section tests four domains: Craft and Structure, Information and Ideas, Standard English Conventions, and Expression of Ideas.

Craft and Structure questions ask you to determine the meaning of words in context, analyse text structure, and evaluate how parts of a passage relate to the whole. You need to read actively — identifying the author’s purpose, tone, and rhetorical choices as you go.

Information and Ideas questions test your ability to locate, interpret, and synthesise information from passages and accompanying graphics. You must be able to draw logical inferences, evaluate claims with evidence, and determine how a graph supports or contradicts a passage’s argument.

Standard English Conventions is the grammar and usage domain. You need mastery of subject-verb agreement, pronoun-antecedent agreement, verb tense consistency, parallel structure, comma usage, semicolons, and colon usage. These questions test whether you can identify and correct errors in sentence structure.

Expression of Ideas questions assess your ability to improve the effectiveness of communication. You will be asked to combine sentences, reorder information for clarity, and choose the most effective phrasing for a given context.


The digital SAT rewards both knowledge and strategy. Here are the approaches that separate top scorers from average ones.

Each module is timed, and the clock runs continuously. You have roughly 71 seconds per Math question and 71 seconds per Reading and Writing question. This is enough time to work carefully, but not enough to agonise over every problem.

The two-pass strategy:

  1. First pass — answer every question you can solve confidently in under 60 seconds
  2. Second pass — return to flagged questions and work through them with the remaining time

Never leave a question unanswered. There is no penalty for guessing on the SAT, so if time runs out, fill in your best guess for every remaining question.

The digital SAT is adaptive at the module level. Your performance on Module 1 determines whether you receive an easier or harder Module 2. A strong Module 1 performance leads to a harder Module 2, but the scoring scale adjusts accordingly — both paths can lead to a high score.

This means you must treat every question in Module 1 as critical. Rushing through easy questions to “save time” for hard ones is a mistake — careless errors in Module 1 can cap your score regardless of Module 2 performance.

On multiple-choice questions, eliminate wrong answers before selecting the right one. On the SAT, wrong answers are designed to be temptingly plausible — they reflect common mistakes, misreadings, or incomplete reasoning. By systematically eliminating answers you know are wrong, you increase your odds significantly.

For Math grid-in questions, work backwards from the answer choices or test specific values. The Desmos calculator built into the test is powerful — use it to graph functions, check intersections, and verify calculations.

For Reading and Writing passages:

  • Read the passage first, actively noting the author’s main argument and tone
  • Do not bring outside knowledge — the answer is always in the passage
  • For “best evidence” questions, find the specific lines that directly support the claim
  • For vocabulary-in-context questions, substitute each answer choice into the sentence and check whether the meaning is preserved

Preparing for the SAT is a structured process. Here is a phased approach that builds both content knowledge and test-taking skill.

  • Take a full-length practice test under timed conditions
  • Score your test and identify which content areas need the most work
  • Note which question types cause the most difficulty (timed pressure, content gaps, or misreading)
  • Study topic notes for each content area, starting with your weakest

  • Work through practice questions for each topic before moving on

Take a diagnostic practice test first. This tells you exactly where you stand and which content areas need the most attention. Then work through the topic notes for your weakest areas, followed by practice questions.

Most students benefit from 8–12 weeks of consistent preparation. Studying 1–2 hours per day is more effective than cramming 5 hours on a single day. The spaced repetition of flashcards and the regular rhythm of practice tests are what build lasting improvement.

The content is comparable, but the adaptive structure changes the experience. Module 1 performance determines Module 2 difficulty, so consistency matters more. The built-in Desmos calculator also changes how you approach Math problems — practising with it from the start is essential.

Aim for 6–8 full-length practice tests over your preparation period. Take them under real conditions — timed, quiet, no phone. Each test is a learning opportunity: the review after the test is more valuable than the test itself.

Read actively. As you work through passages, identify the author’s argument, tone, and evidence before looking at the questions. For grammar questions, learn the core rules (subject-verb agreement, pronoun clarity, comma usage) and practise applying them. Vocabulary improves through reading widely, not through memorising word lists in isolation.

Should I guess on questions I do not know?

Always. There is no penalty for guessing on the SAT. If you cannot solve a question, eliminate as many wrong answers as you can, then guess from the remaining choices. Never leave a question blank.
