SAT reading study notes - Comprehension

  • Main Idea: the central point the author is making. Often found in the first or last paragraph. Every detail connects back to this.
  • Supporting Details: facts, examples, and evidence that support the main idea. Always verify answer choices against specific textual evidence.
  • Inferences: logical conclusions drawn from textual evidence. Must be directly supported — not reasonable guesses.
  • Purpose: why the author wrote the passage or included a specific detail — to inform, persuade, entertain, or explain.
  • Tone: the author’s attitude toward the subject — objective, critical, enthusiastic, skeptical. Determined by word choice.
  • Structure: how the passage is organised — chronological, compare/contrast, cause/effect, problem/solution.

Problem: The passage states that “the committee decided to postpone the project indefinitely.” What can be inferred?

Solution: Step 1: “Postpone” means delay; “indefinitely” means with no set end date Step 2: The committee has not cancelled the project but has no current plans to continue Step 3: The correct inference is that the project may resume in the future but there is no timeline


Problem: The author mentions “a 2019 study” in paragraph 3. What is the primary purpose of this reference?

Solution: Step 1: Read the sentence containing the reference Step 2: Check what claim the study supports Step 3: The study provides evidence for the author’s argument — it is not the main point itself Step 4: Choose the answer that says “to provide evidence for” or “to support the claim that”

Key insight: Specific examples, studies, and data are always in service of a broader claim. The question asks what function they serve.


Problem: “The scientist’s findings were provocative.” What does “provocative” most nearly mean?

Solution: Step 1: Read the surrounding sentences for context Step 2: If the findings sparked debate or challenged existing views, “provocative” means “stimulating discussion” Step 3: It does NOT mean “annoying” or “offensive” — test each option by substituting it back

Key insight: The SAT tests words with multiple meanings. Always use context, not just the most common definition.


Reading comprehension is like being a detective at a crime scene — every sentence is a clue, and you need to piece together what happened, why, and what it means. The main idea is the suspect you are after; supporting details are the evidence that points to them. Inference is reading between the lines — the author did not say it directly, but the clues are there if you look. Purpose is asking “why did the author write this?” — were they trying to inform, persuade, or entertain? Every passage has a structure, and understanding that structure is like understanding the blueprint of a building.

Choosing answers based on outside knowledge rather than the passage. The SAT reading section tests what the passage says, not what you already know about the topic. An answer choice that is true as a rule but not supported by the passage is incorrect. Always find specific textual evidence for your answer before selecting it.

Confusing inference with explicit statements. Some questions ask what the passage “implies” or “suggests,” which requires drawing a logical conclusion from the text. Other questions ask what is “stated” or “directly supported.” Students often select explicit statements for inference questions or make unsupported leaps for explicit questions. Identify the question type before answering.

Overlooking qualifying language. Passages often include words like “may,” “sometimes,” “often,” or “in most cases” that limit the scope of a claim. Answer choices that remove these qualifiers and make absolute statements (using “always,” “never,” “all,” or “none”) are in standard practice incorrect. Match the strength of the answer to the strength of the passage’s claim.
